Advanced Opportunities
The following are resources you can use to search for research opportunities, internships, fellowships, and scholarships.
The Importance of Internships
Even if you aren't planning on going into research, doing an internship can really help you get a job after you graduate. While it is very possible to get a job without experience, many jobs today (even "entry level" jobs) do want some sort of work experience. It will also put you ahead of other candidates for the jobs that don't require any experience, and you can make connections with professionals who can help find jobs or act as references. They also come with other benefits such as food, housing, and a stipend. Even if it requires applying to many positions to land your first internship, the effort will really pay out in the end. Below are some resources you can use to search for research opportunities, internships, fellowships, and scholarships. Even if you don't want to work in research or in a lab, internships can help you get your first job. |

Chicago Area Research Opportunities
Argonne National Laboratory
The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory, a major research center, is pleased to announce opportunities for college and university undergraduate students to participate in the Laboratory's ongoing research programs. In addition to such opportunities, the U.S. Department of Energy is directly sponsoring research participation at other DOE facilities. At Argonne, college/university students may obtain research experience through the Department of Energy's Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships Program or the Student Research Participation Program. |
Fermilab
Each summer Fermilab offers a variety of intern programs for secondary school teachers, high school students, undergraduates and graduate students. Interns have an opportunity to work on projects that support particle physics experiments in areas such as applied physics, engineering and computing. Working with Fermilab scientists or engineers, interns have an opportunity to experience current research methods and study problems of particle physics research. |

National Research Opportunities
National Science Foundation
The NSF funds many undergraduate research opportunities throughout the country. You can search a complete list of Research Experiences for Undergraduates for opportunities in 18 different scientific disciplines, or you can search by keyword for specific research interests. |
NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program
NASA USRP provides hands-on technical and research experiences with outstanding NASA mentors. The Undergraduate Student Research Program (USRP) is located at 12 NASA research centers and facilities around the country. When you apply you have the opportunity to submit your application through SOLAR to your top 15 projects or opportunity choices. More information... This site will direct you to the Office of Education Infrastructure Division, where you can use the One Stop Shopping Initiative for NASA Interns, Fellows and Scholars to search for the available NASA opportunities. |
DOE Community College Internships
The Community College Internship (CCI) program seeks to encourage community college students to enter technical careers relevant to the DOE mission by providing technical training experiences at the DOE laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 15 participating DOE laboratories. They work on technologies or instrumentation projects or major research facilities supporting DOE’s mission, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers. DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 15 participating DOE laboratories. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission. |
